Conversations With A Troll
Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 11:51AM [I deleted the vlog because it was kinda troll bait lol]
I'll admit I'm a pretty reactive, emotional person, but I've never quite understood the mind of a troll. I mean, if someone is in my face, I can act like a real douchebag, but I've never hunted someone else down to be a douchebag. And yet, here on the Internet, especially on YouTube, this behavior is expected with a shrug. But I just don't get it.
A friend of mine on Facebook once said, "you kind of have to expect this kind of thing when you decide to be an internet personality." I responded with, "just because you know the water's going to be cold doesn't mean you won't shiver." I'm still getting used to the trolls, and I still don't understand them.
On my most recent troll, I really tried to understand, in a Chris Hansen sort of way. It went as follows.
Troll (on my Illuminati video): This videos is retarded the bitch is a moron. Fuckin buffoon.
Troll (on my channel): Fuckin moron.
Me (on my channel): LoL and "fucking moron" intelligently and rationally proves me wrong how? ;) Behold idiocy, my executives! XD
Troll (PM): No proof needed, you're just a douche, a kiss ass of anything main steam with childish opinions who loves the sound of her own voice. I'm sure you think its cute but I can not find any thing agreeable with you.
Me (PM): How is this message productive? I'm really curious about your opinion.
Troll (PM): Dont bother, you should just apologise.
Me (PM): Okay, so how does profanity and stereotypically "trolling" behavior inspire one to give an apology? I really want to know. To declare your position with outward aggression and abuse generally inspires a negative, defensive, and emotional response. I'm sure you're well aware of this. Picture, for a moment, my reading of your comments. Can you imagine me responding with "gee, I really offended this person. How terrible of me. I better apologize." Isn't it more likely that a person would read this, get really pissed off, and fueled by emotion, either argue with or ignore everything you have to say? Think about it.
Troll (PM): You again Jesus give me strength, just apologize and get it over with.
Me (PM): You have yet to explain to me for what I must apologize.
And he hasn't responded. You think he will? And this warrants some discussion - do you think he ACTUALLY expects an apology? Or did he have different goals?
UPDATE:
Troll (PM): I don't see why you feel the need to drag this out. Haven't you got other things to do apart from being rude. May God have mercy on your soul.
Me (PM): Hmm. Interesting approach. You negate your previous curse-ridden outbursts and rationality-absent arguments, and now accuse me of being "rude." Furthermore, to paint yourself as righteous and myself as in the wrong, you use the name of God. Fascinating. Tell me, where did you learn this approach? Has it been reinforced with past experience? Do you often find that you can say whatever you want to people, and if they dare defend their positions, you can simply guilt trip them into silence by saying "god bless you?" Has this taught you that you needn't take responsibility for your irrational, abusive remarks on the internet? Or do you behave this way in person too?
I perhaps he raises a valid question. Why am I dragging this out? Because I don't like the idea of people "getting away" with this kind of behavior.
UPDATE:
Troll (PM): BE GONE SATAN, You have no authority here. Repent before its to late.
Me (PM): Is that really the best you can do?
And since we're talking about God, and Satan, consider the Christian point of view of profanity, since you used it so unabashedly in your initial messages toward me.
"With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who are made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things should not be this way" (James 3:9-10). Christians should honor the purpose of speech by using our mouths to praise God and leading others to obey the Lord through faith in Jesus Christ. Every word we speak should be "gracious" and "seasoned with salt" (Col. 4:6). "Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes--these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God." (Ephesians 5:4)
I believe I could cite other sources that consider use of profanity presenting yourself as an unfit witness, but I haven't the time to track such things down.
Which of us owes an apology?
I think I'm gonna stop now because now I feel like I'm picking on a retarded person. :/
FYI I feel morally obligated to point out I accidently quoted Ephesians twice in my real message to him, and also sent him a follow up apologizing for that.
UPDATE:
I take back my statement that this little game was over with. Shit just got real.
Me (PM): Forgive my last message, I accidentally quoted Ephesians 5:4 twice. ;)
Troll (PM): Apology accepted, there that wasn't so hard was it,don't you feel better?
Me (PM): I apologized for posting a bible quote twice. You asked me for an apology long before this incident took place, so this message makes no logical sense. I still have yet to apologize for what you initially asked for an apology for. :( Interesting attempt at achieving dominance in this little non-debate we're having, though. I'm clearly still winning, and you have yet to give me a single argument. This is getting boring.
Now I'm angry.
I'm really disappointed in myself. I initially genuinely wanted answers, and I let him piss me off. I can barely believe it...

This is absolutely hilarious of trolls like him. They don't have any reason to hate you yet just love bashing on whatever. I love your response to that person - an appropriate matter. I don't see what the reason was for you to apologize to that person at all. The person came up front and attacked you, and then just PMed you. So methinks that that person should be apologizing instead of you. :) I wonder if this person will be able to read this blog and respond back.
Someone's jealous of Lindsay's amazingness.
I cannot do anything else but agree with you on every aspect you mentioned.
Language is known to be one of the main tools of humanity to proove a point and intelligence.
By saying "how does profanity and stereotypically "trolling" behavior inspire one to give an apology? " and "declare your position with outward aggression and abuse generally inspires a negative, defensive, and emotional response" you are reaching that person`s point of linguistic incompetence.
Saying something is a language that is not of his standard you are making him unsure and getting this kind of response: "You again Jesus give me strength, just apologize and get it over with."
And it is sad to see that he has to comment on your video like that, because he simply didn`t unbderstand it.
Sad. Just sad.
This is hilarious. I'm laughing my a** off! The troll must be having an off day. Therefore he/she goes around provoking people and make them apologize. A psychotic way of looking for a cheap thrill!
Plus, I think you overwhelmed him/her with the words you use. So rather than picking up a dictionary, the troll just stubbornly insist that you apologize for whatever imaginary wrong-doing you have committed. Priceless! :D
I think that troll was sad. They had not one intelligent comeback [I don't know if it was a guy or girl-they expressed themselves like a guy then the "Jesus give me strength" was a little feminine]. They started the game but didn't know they were going to be put in the spot. I also dislike people bible slapping other people, when they really haven't read the bible thoroughly themselves! If they are even literate in the first place they wouldn't have been a troll on your you tube video.
Well I know not all people are supposed to agree with you, but a smart debate is definitely welcome, I would think. Trolling is pathetic, it saddens me the condition of today's priorities of grammar and vocabulary usage. It's just not young people but older folks who don't know how to spell or have the desire to spell correctly, proofread their posts or use "Sunday" words to express and challenge themselves.
Well Thanks to Asian Pop Addict's website, I was able to see your JYJ video commentary/contest submission. I was impressed that there IS more intelligent life out there representing the Global Pop World! Keep moving forward (trolls and all!) I look forward to all your content.
I totally hate trolls, the least they could do is post logical responses. They always bring God into the argument. If I was a practicing Christian I think I would be offended.
P.s. I haven't heard anything offensive in your videos as of yet, and if I found anything offensive, I'm not sensitive enough to let it affect my life like this guy apparently did. Maybe it was referencing 300? Some guys are so sensitive about being called gay. Anyways~ This was amusing, I would and have gotten into similar arguments on youtube.
Love the channel <3
Gosh, i don't know what's pissing me off more, the fact that he is being more of a douche than he already is, or the fact that he has one of the crappiest arguments I have ever heard.
The part that made me crack up was when he/she (to be fair) said "BEGONE SATAN..." I was like.... You have got to be kidding me.
Don't let him bother you, I love your videos. They give me different perspectives that I've never noticed before, and I'm glad I'm learning something in your videos, unlike the other ones on youtube that just rot my brain. But apparently, as the we can see, using this jerk as an example, people have a problem with opinions. "To each one's own." (I am sure I servilely butchered that saying by mixing up some words)
Thanks for the videos. I enjoy them, it's a great lesson and great entertainment, not many people can do that. (on youtube)
trolls want attention. they see your audience and they say "gee, bet i can get them to look my way. i'll be obnoxious and try to piss off as many people as i can in one go. they won't be able to ignore me." seriously, feeding them gives them credit for sloppy work and only encourages them to return. reward sensible people (both those you agree with and don't) with comments/conversation. ignore the trolls. chances are, half of them will see that good behavior gets them what they want and will convert. or just do whatever. i already lost intrest in my own words. lol (no offense!)
