Asian pop = Anti-Westerners? Will MNET America hurt or help?

You are very well spoken, have a great presence and voice worth listening to. You do make some valid points. I applaud your appreciation for Korean music and was entertained watching your video. I know that some of what you said is "tongue in cheek". That said, as an Asian American entertainment professional, let me share some of my thoughts with you... a white, daughter of the American Revolution with a self-proclaimed irrational sense of entitlement.

How is an Asian company targeting Asian Americans racist? Is BET racist for targeting African Americans? Is Telemundo racist for targeting Latinos? Almost every media outlet in the country targets you and people like you. We don't see many Asian Americans on TV, in film or music. Asian Americans are underserved by mainstream media. I presume that's why CJ chose to launch MNET America.

And what you call Asian superiority - you acknowledge the facts that are quoted as being possibly true - might be interpreted merely as pride. But many non-Asians are more comfortable with Asians when we adhere to the stereotype of being the silent, model minority.

Maybe Asian Americans like K-pop not just because it's Asian, but because it's good and the performers don't look like all the other pop stars in the USA. Maybe they like it because it speaks to us in a way that Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus doesn't or can't, much in the same manner that your opinion just doesn't resonate with me. But really, even if some people like it because it's Asian, what's wrong with that?

You state that if you like Asian pop, you should like American pop and vice versa. Well, unfortunately that is really only a one way street. Many Koreans and Asians love American popular music in the same manner that they love and consume American TV and film. After all, Hollywood is recognized all around the world and our creative content is one the country's greatest exports. But as you know, that content is delivered in English. Consumers outside of the US have grown accustomed to seeing Hollywood films and TV shows either dubbed or subtitled. They have embraced our music despite being performed in a language foreign to them. At the same time, when American's are offered the chance to watch film and TV shows from other countries, we usually reject it. We generally just don't like watching product with subtitles or dubbed into English.

So when you wonder why the best Asian pop stars haven't gone global, some of them have. Korean pop stars like Rain, Seven and Boa are huge in countries around the world (outside of the US). Do the fans outside of Korea like them because they're are Asian or because they are good? American pop stars have ridden on Hollywood's coat-tails, using the huge machine in place to get sampled around the world. Unfortunately, many Asian pop stars don't have access to the same machine.

And yes, some Asians do get surgery to their eyes in much the way that some women like to die their hair red.

I'm sorry that you feel a little excluded by MNET's introductory video. In a way, you get to experience what many Asian Americans feel when watching network television, going to a movie theater or listening to music here in our country, not to mention in other facets of daily life. So, to answer your question, don't worry, no need for the yellow hysteria. There is no evil oriental plot afoot. MNET won't be hurting America, just making the entertainment and music offerings a little more diverse. If you really want to help break down the walls between Asians and non-Asians, I would ask you to rethink your position and help celebrate the launch of MNET. Nobody is trying to exclude you, they are just trying give Asian Americans a seat at the table, a table they hope is big enough so that even you are welcome to join.

Wow...you know...I was going to say something...but I think this guy >(Teddy Zee?) pretty much sums it all up lol

I do understand where you are coming from though Linzy. I am Asian, although not perceptibly enough in some cases. I am predominantly Spanish and only a fraction Chinese. In any case, through my experiences in the Asian community, whether it be dating or friendship, from a non-Asian perspective, the Asian community can seem a bit closed off and conservative in many cases. I know this may be generalizing but, for the most part, Asians are a very close-knit community and for anyone who has come close enough to experience it first hand, would probably agree with you in the sense that sometimes Asians do seem to give off this superiority complex and definitely do not hide their sense of pride toward being a homologous and untainted race. You can never be one of them...but on the other hand...same goes for pretty much any culture. lol

This is definitely my favourite video of yours as it really gave me something to think about. Being asian, I did answer affirmitive when you asked whether we liked the music because it was asian. In my peer group, part of the reason we like k-pop is because the white people in our grade don't (I am in highschool, yes). In some ways, we feel like it's our own little exclusive club, which would agree with the first commentors ideas, that it connects us in a way that white artists don't.

But, thank you for making this video. I thouroughly enjoy your thoughts regarding asian artists, and it was a surprise when I found an Anglo-Saxon lady reveiwing my favourite Korean band =) By the end of the video, you had turned it into a good surprise.
Good job =)

great post. hah! i think i just came to the conclusion that i like kpop/jpop because it's asian. tho i can't get down with cantopop. why? my truth is i'm holding onto a music and style combination that i can't get here so easily. i dig "straight" guyliner, r&b, dancey heavy drum and bass, sick choreography and theatricality. i'm a little older (not too much!) i'm pulling from erasure, atb, placebo, 112, and a thousand other culturally incompatible sources and finding something interesting in this music. plus, i just happen to like anything in a foreign language. nyeh.
